ago. They fall to Earth as meteorites and dust. Flows of compounds including the building blocks of membranes and polymers, find their way into a pool which fills by a pulse from a nearby geyser, dries down, and fills again. A cycle or <strong>engine<\/strong> is then set up when these polymers form between dried films of lipid and bud off into membrane bounded <strong>protocells<\/strong>. A stabilizing effect between polymers and the membranes that encapsulate them works to allow them to be <strong>tested<\/strong> with some surviving until the next dry-down. As the water level drops, protocells aggregate together and form a gel-phase in which <strong>interacting metabolic cycles<\/strong> can arise. The aggregate fully dries down, protocells fusing into layers where polymers re-synthesize, template and elongate. Over many such cycles the first primitive functions of biology emerge as populations of protocells and their polymers undergo <strong>combinatorial selection<\/strong>. Eventually, protocell aggregates are capable of collective evolution and become robust to distribution as the first <em>progenote<\/em>, a <strong>pre-life<\/strong> form on the way to the rise of the first microbial communities.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2245\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2245\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" href=\"\">Distribution<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2245\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2245\"><p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong> As protocell aggregates (progenotes) <strong>distribute<\/strong> from their home hot spring pool they flow downstream into other pools, or blow preserved as dried films across a wide landscape. Relocated protocell colonies must adapt to a variety of conditions. In cooler and more dilute streams and ponds beyond the rich chemical and energy sources of hot springs they must evolve ways to capture sunlight in the first primitive forms of <strong>photosynthesis<\/strong>. In such an environment of horizontal sharing of the products of molecular evolution, the first dividing, living cells arise and fragile forms of <strong>early life<\/strong> populate freshwater settings on the land.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2246\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"6\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2246\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" href=\"\">Adaptation<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2246\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"6\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2246\"><p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong> Early life <strong>adapts<\/strong> to an increasingly diverse variety of settings, including streams, ponds, lakeshores, and even cracks in rocks and eventually finds its way to the increasing salty settings of coastal estuaries. At this time, energy-driven <strong>active pores<\/strong> and <strong>robust cell membranes<\/strong> must have evolved to permit existence in higher salt environments.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2247\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"7\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2247\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" href=\"\">Colonization<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2247\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"7\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2247\"><p><strong>Step 7:<\/strong> As early life becomes more robust, it can survive in the violent tide and storm influenced sea shores and then gains <strong>global<\/strong> accesses to <strong>colonize<\/strong> a large living space at the edges of and within the world&#8217;s oceans.
